Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Favorite Dead Bumper Stickers?

Seeing Stealz post about Crazy Fingers reminded me of my favorite Dead bumper sticker. Back in the 80's I used to see this VW van, obviously a "Dead Sled" vehicle with a bumper sticker I always admired. It said:

"Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go.
We just ride.."

Anybody have any favorites from back then?

Yeah, except for guys like Dire and me, the four hours now include the 3 hrs and 50 minutes of warmup while we try to remember how and what to do, and wait for the blood to get out of midsection and into the important place...

Well, I didn't even mention that there's the 50% chance of 4 turning to 24 if we fall asleep while conducting "motivational video viewing" of Frau Stripes in Banana Hands for the 37th time...

Damn, gotta see if I can find that one again...you know, when you posted that way back when, it was one of the first "online videos" I ever viewed...I really was that new to all this...

Do it! Top post a vote.

And yeah, it already is the unwritten motto. For example:

Said to me Saturday night in Worcester by a 20 year old kid: "Dude what did you think of that China->Rider? I thought it really got going, really hot man!"

To which I thought: "You mean the one where they literally had to stop in the middle of the segue and restart Rider?! That didn't happen when I was touring?!?!?!"

(hint: I am the picky one here)

My sister at a DEAD show in 86:

Punk approaches her, and literally pitches his product with this line: "wanna buy some good shit from the 60s?"

Sister: "what kind?"

Punk: "you know, 60's drugs! Really good..."

Sister: "kid, you weren't alive then--how do you know?"

Punk: shrugs and walks off...

Here's another one.

Probably around summer of '89 I was working at a place in corporate America and looked it. I come out of the show and a long-haired-non-corporate-america friend of mine is smoking something that just smells great. I ask him where he got it from and he points to a long-haired hippie freak a few feet away from me.

I go over to the guy and ask if I too could purchase some of said great smelling stuff. Says he: "I don't know what you are talking about."

I point to my friend and say "You know, the stuff you just sold him."

"Sorry buddy, you got the wrong guy."

So I get exasperated, go back over to my long-haired friend and give him some money and say "Go by me some of the fucking stuff, the guy thinks I am a narc."

He goes over, purchases said product and... while the guy is watching, walks back and hands it directly to me. At which point I smile sweetly and wave as all the color runs out of the guys face.

Was a Dead bumper-sticker that I made years ago, using Ben and Jerry's stickers... Their phrase was, "Ben & Jerry's, Vermont's Finest All-Natural Ice Cream."

I cut those bumper-stickers (It took two) apart to read:

"Bob & Jerry's, San Fran's Finest All-Natural Sound"

~Peace~

Hey DM or anybody: I have caught you guys using this term hereabouts, but I don't recall reading it in the media during the 80s & 90s, nor hearing it from the few fans I associated with during my hiatus from the band...

Was this really a BIG nickname for him? Clearly this bumper sticker suggests so, but if I saw it then, I wouldn't have known who it was about...

Never cared for it myself. The only place I've ever heard anyone call Jerry "the fat man" was on this forum.

Well, it was really when Jerry had gotten kind of big and people were noticing. I had a 72 VW Bus with a 4x4 for a back bumper with nothing on it. I don't usually like to identify myself by drawing too much attention, I figured Gus the Bus did enough of that. I was coming out of the Greek shows in '85 still reeling from how fantastic Jerry was and was thinking that he still has it even though he was seeming a bit unhealthy. When I came down the stairs to the street thinking all this I looked up and there was a guy holding that bumper sticker up in the air. All of a sudden the crowd vanished and it was just me, the guy and the bumper sticker. I was drawn to it because it was glowing with a golden halo and I knew that THIS was the bumper sticker I had been waiting for. As I held the sticker in my hand, staring at it, smiling and walking down the street, I heard a voice come from somewhere behind me saying, "Hey! You gonna pay for that or what?" So I handed the messenger a one-dollar bill as I patted him on the shoulder saying "off you go now" and went back to my rapt attention on the bumper sticker. When I got to Gus the Bus I could tell he knew something was up, I think he was actually smiling. I showed him the bumper sticker and told him to assume the position. He did so gladly and willingly and I think he let out a little "ahhhhh" as I pasted his new ornament on. Got a lot of comments but not from Deadheads. I liked it though.
